从马拉西亚回清迈的途中，看了这本小说——Reese's Book Club 推荐的 First Lie Wins。

读小说，一气呵成最过瘾。

在飞机上完成了 40%，想着第二天就能看完。

结果磨磨叽叽，现在才看完，后半部分的阅读体验大不如前半部分。一是我读得断断续续，二是后期大女主光环太多，感觉草草收尾。作者说她以前是写 Young Adult 小说，这是第一次尝试新风格——好吧，再接再厉！

关于故事，不剧透。只聊聊语言学习。

读小说是复习词汇的好机会。

我在手机的 Kindle app 上读的书，遇到有意思的语言点随手高亮。读得很顺，读完还能学英语，一石二鸟。

读完发现共做了 184 条笔记：

印象最深刻的是这个高频句式：It takes everything in me to...

It takes everything in me not to/to... 可以理解为「我已经忍到了极限」「心里已经翻了无数个白眼」。

这句话也体现了女主的身份和性格。当我们想吐槽某件事的时候就可以用到它，比如 It takes everything in me not to fall for this blog✌️

学一些常见实用的表达，你也来都来了顺便学点吧。

My hands are tied, Lucca. You haven't left me any other choice. （我也无能为力） I'm a sucker for a cute small town.（a sucker for something 可以理解为「XX控」） They could hook me up to a lie detector and I'd pass with flying colors.（这个说法太常见了，必会） As you've said before, I am resourceful and think on my feet.（形容一个人「机灵」可以用到 think on one's feet） ‍Everything looks delicious. Y'all have outdone yourself.（去别人家做客，夸主人厨艺棒用这句） And as Mama used to say, Better the devil you know.（非常实用的表达） And Damsel in Distress was absolutely the right approach.（查一下 Damsel in Distress） You're going to be a sitting duck while you wait for the next set of intructions.（sitting duck 出现了两次，可以理解为「坐以待毙」）

再看一些「原来这个词还能这样用！」

He moves away from the rocker and stops on the top step, his hands balled in fists. We're giving Rachel a good show, so I decide to table this conversation until we're in the privacy of our bedroom.（table 在这里表示「搁置」） I'm hitting the shower. （知道 hit the gym/road，原来也可以说 hit the shower。想到 grab 的灵活用法，除了常见的 grab a bite，也可以说成 grab a movie 等） I clocked him coming in through the service entrance in a maintenance uniform.（clock 在这里表示 recognize） Anything at all that will clue me in to who he really is.（clue sb. in on 表示「给某人提供信息」，书中用的是 clue sb in to） The shock of what she just said about Mr. Smith washes over my face, then I school my expression into the blank slate I've spent years perfecting.（书中出现了类似的 groom） I can tell he's a little thrown for a second or two, but then seems to pull himself back together.（看到这个 thrown 想到之前在《小屁孩日记》中学到的 be thrown for a loop）

小说场景是现代生活，作者用大量的动词短语和习语让故事更接地气，这些用法值得我们学习。

有的我只做了标记，想进步就自己做做功课吧。

(picking apart 表示「挑剔」，出现了两次） ...the little old ladies on this street have given me a wide berth after the spectacle in the driveway. Or were you already planning to go rogue before you were given your instructions? I was also going to tell you not to let your feelings show, but you have that down pat. Not even a minute later, there is a knock on the door and I almost jump out of my skin.（小说中也出现了 get under one's skin）

读小说是奢侈的。不需要什么技巧，但需要大块时间，酣畅淋漓地融入一个故事。如今小说的读得很少，多数是出门候机坐飞机时读。

读小说是奢侈的，但生活中要有小说。出门带一本小说，在等待和旅途中体验一段人生。
