生在南洋，学在西洋，婚在东洋，仕在北洋。辜鸿铭精通英、法、德、拉丁、希腊、马来西亚等9种语言，拥有13个博士学位，学贯中西，成为一代著名的学者和翻译家。

林语堂曾赞许他，英文文字超越出众，二百年来，未见其右边。

辜鸿铭少年意气风发，中年功成名就，先后任职湖广总督张之洞的幕僚和北京大学的英文教授，但到了晚年却倍凄凉，只换来一句，“性孤僻，发辫至死犹存”。

为让西方人了解中国的孔孟哲学，辜氏一生著述颇丰，且多用英文写成，代表作The Spirit of the Chinese People（《中国人的精神》，又名《春秋大义》）。

在中华民族内忧外患、灾难深重的年代，该书横空出世，是一战前后世界范围内兴起的东方文化思潮的代表作之一，揭示了中国人的精神生活，中国传统文化的永恒价值。

《中国人的精神》曾一度轰动西方，在西方世界引起巨大反响，先后被译为德语、法语、汉语等语言，并多次再版。德国学者奥斯卡·A·H·施密茨(Oscar.A.H.Schmitz)将其译成德文，掀起了数十年的辜鸿铭热。

西方流传着这样一句话：“到中国可以不看三大殿，不可不看辜鸿铭。”托尔斯泰、泰戈尔、毛姆等世界级学者都与辜鸿铭有过交往，对他评价颇高。

德国学者海因里希·纳尔逊(Heinrich Nelson)也是辜鸿铭的崇拜者和译者之一。他曾在辜鸿铭Vox clamantis（《呐喊》，又名《哀诉之音》）的德语译文中的 "译者前言 "中作了如此描述：

Here we stand face to face with a really extraordinary phenomenon, who has by no means been adequately taken note of: a man who has absorbed and digested Western culture in the most thorough manner, who knows Goethe just like a German, who knows Carlyle, Emerson, and other Anglo-Saxon writers just like an Anglo-Saxon, who is at home with the Bible like the best Christian, but whose independent, clear mind has possessed the power, not only to maintain his own peculiarity, but also to see that for their self-preservation it is necessary for Oriental people to stand firm upon the ground of their own ancient, tested culture, not to allow Western culture, tailored for completely different circumstance, to impose itself upon them, for its modern materialistic civilization could work on them merely as a subversive, killing poison.

辜鸿铭是第一个将中国经典翻译给西方世界的中国学者。

《论语》(The Discourses and Sayings of Confucius:A New Special Translation，Illustrated with Quotations from Goethe and Other Writers)、《中庸》(The Universal Order or Conduct of Life)和《大学》(Higher Education)一经出版，创获甚巨，辜鸿铭也因此名扬海外。

其实，近代翻译孔孟最出名的还属汉学家理雅各。虽然其汉语造诣很高，但由于中西文化差异巨大，理雅各的翻译虽相较于之前外国传教士和汉学家的翻译更为准确，但难免出现误解曲解、断章取义的现象。

我们一起来看理雅各和辜鸿铭翻译的《论语》第一则。

子曰：“学而时习之，不亦说乎？有朋自远方来，不亦乐乎？人不知而不愠，不亦君子乎？”《论语 ·学而》

理雅各：The Master said, “Is it not pleasant to learn with a constant perseverance and application? Is it not delightful to have friends coming from distant quarters? Is he not a man of complete virtue, who feels no discomposure though men may take no note of him?”

辜鸿铭：Confucius remarked, “It is indeed a pleasure to acquire knowledge and, as you go on acquiring, to put into practice what you have acquired. A greater pleasure still it is when friends of congenial minds come from afar to seek you because of your attainments. But he is truly a wise and good man who feels no discomposure even when he is not noticed of men.”

辜鸿铭翻译儒家书籍，主要采用意译法，为实现动态对等。除努力再现原作风格外，辜鸿铭还引用歌德、卡莱尔、阿诺德、莎士比亚等西方著名作家和思想家来注释某些经文。这也是儒经翻译史上的第一次。

当然，辜鸿铭的译文也存在不少争议，最大的缺点在于过分意译，随意添加了许多原文没有的内容。

但究其初衷，辜鸿铭翻译儒经就为中国人和中国文化“正名”，消除西方人的偏见，弘扬中国传统文化。任职北大英文教授期间，辜鸿铭也以身作则，影响学生们接受传统中国文化，树立中国民族文化精神。

辜鸿铭做到了。

也许在大多数人眼里，这戴着瓜皮帽、留着长辫的“怪老头”晚年倍凄凉，逃离北大，渐没于历史的粉尘之中。但他的一生是热忱的，有着自己的坚持和信念。他是现代西方文化的有力批判者，是儒学在世界的成果诠释者。

最后，让我们一起致敬这位伟大的学者。
